A Memphis police officer who was shot at a local library earlier this month has died from his injuries. The officer, identified as Officer Scotty Triplett, was shot on January 10th while responding to a call about a disturbance at the library.
According to police, the suspect, 21-year-old Justin Welch, was causing a disturbance at the library when officers arrived on the scene. Welch reportedly began firing at officers, hitting Officer Triplett and another officer.
Officer Triplett was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he remained until his passing on January 24th. The other officer, whose name has not been released, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released from the hospital.
Welch was taken into custody after the shooting and has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

The shooting has prompted an outpouring of support from the community, with many expressing their condolences to Officer Triplett's family and the Memphis Police Department. Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland released a statement calling the shooting "senseless and tragic."
The shooting also comes amid a wave of violence against police officers across the country. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 360 officers were killed in the line of duty in 2021, the highest number in more than a decade.
The Memphis Police Department has not yet announced any plans for a memorial service for Officer Triplett, but it is expected that the department will hold a service to honour his life and service to the community.
