The death of a Catholic bishop in Los Angeles is being investigated as a murder after he was found shot in his residence on Tuesday. Bishop Aloysius V. Callaghan, who was known for his work as a "peacemaker" in the community, was found dead from a gunshot wound in his home in the Westlake neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

According to police, the bishop was found by a housekeeper who arrived at his residence on Tuesday morning. The housekeeper reported that she found the bishop lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators say that they are currently following up on leads and interviewing potential witnesses in the case. They have not yet released any information about a possible motive for the shooting or any suspects in the case.

Bishop Callaghan was known for his work as a mediator and peacemaker in the community, working with various groups to resolve conflicts and promote non-violence. He was also involved in various social justice initiatives, including efforts to combat poverty and homelessness in the area.

In a statement, Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez praised Bishop Callaghan for his service to the community and expressed his sadness at the news of his death.

"The Catholic community in Los Angeles is deeply saddened by the news of Bishop Callaghan's death," Archbishop Gomez said. "He was a beloved member of our community, known for his tireless efforts to promote peace and justice. We will miss him dearly."

The shooting has shocked the community and raised concerns about the safety of religious leaders in the area. Police say that they are continuing to investigate the case and are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
